Last month was a bumper at the movies. I watched 11 movies in total and a lot of them were old Hindi movies. It’s fun to go hunting for movies to watch on Youtube, especially when a lot of them are free (but not ad free). Here’s the last set of four movies from April…

Do Ladke Dono Kadke

The story of two broke young robbers who impulsively kidnap a child that was supposed to be the target of a kidnapping gang. What forms is a triangle of sorts, the pros are demanding ransom while searching for the stolen child, the amateurs are caring for the child and making novice demands, and the parents and police and in knots trying to untangle the multiple calls and demands.

I picked this movie to watch on a whim and wasn’t disappointed. But I wasn’t sold on it either. It’s supposed to be a funny movie but I didn’t find it humorous. Palekar’s falling in love with a widow and immediately turning a good leaf is cliched in both departments. The end also is very unbelievable. It as if the director got tired of doing his thing and ended the movie with the first ludicrous happily-ever-after idea he thought of.

Chhote Nawab

Chhote Nawab isn’t chhote, he is a 20 year old who behaves like a 5 year old because he was born on February 29th. Spoilt and pampered he has no understanding of the world and it’s ways. When his father suddenly passes away Chhote Nawab is left floundering. A friend of his fathers find him and takes him away to Calcutta where he grows up rather quickly.

An old movie but a gem, not only for Mehmood but also the ideas, emotions and situations explored. There are a lot of layers to  this movie. My only complaint though is the sudden jumps in time the director made maybe because he was running out of time. the pace of the first half and second half are mismatched.

Excellent music! Especially ‘Matwali Ankhon Wale’, it was a treat to watch Mehmood dance with the beautiful Helen.

Based on the life of a little boy in Kashmir who is trying to reclaim his donkey that the family lost to debt. This is a story of borders, militancy, violence and the people of Kashmir.

The story explores various things, but what stood out for me was the ease with which children can be used for terrorism. Their innocence misused. That said the intelligence of children is also shown. An good movie both for children and adults.

Lucy gets used as a drug mule, the substance leaks into her system and give her powers. She is able to use more than 10% of her brain. What happens when you use 100% of your brain is the story.

A movie about role reversal and dignity of labour, Itni si Baat starts off with the story of Raja meeting Asha and falling in love. They get married and have two children as the years roll by. As the family grows Raja’s income starts to run out and Asha’s work load increases.

Neither understand the others challenges and constraints and fights keep breaking out. Then a challenge gets thrown. Asha decides to take up a job and show she can earn more than Raja. Raja in turn wants to show he can run the house better. Both learn a lesson the hard way.

Namkeen

Gerulal a trucker takes up a room is the dilapidated house of Jugni. Jugni and her three daughters if marriageable age work hard to make a living. Slowly Gerulal gets to know the family and falls in love with the eldest sister Mimki.

Then suddenly he gets called away and does not return for months until he accidentally bumps into Chinki the youngest in a dancing troop. He returns to find that everything has changed for the family. Waheeda’s acting stood out for me!

Mera Biwi ki Shaadi

Not hilarious but funny at a different level this movie is about a guy who is a hypochondriac. Coincidences lead Bhagawant to believe he has a heart condition that will kill him in 3 months. Worried about his wife and what will happen to her after he’s gone, causes him to try and find her a new husband.

At this time an old friend of hers makes entry and Bhagawant tries in many ways to bring them together. His constant conspiracies leads his wife to believe he is cheating on her. All of this leads to many comical situations between husband and wife before the truth comes out.

This is one of Doordarshan and my favourite movies, I’ve watched it so many times on Doordarshan. 😀 This movie is about a spirit that has left the world because of an incomplete love story. For daring to love a princess, an artist is buried alive. Almost a century later the princess is reborn and the spirit awakens to try and find his love again.

The movie mostly explores the unseen and unbelievable – it starts with the disclaimer that for those who believe proof is not necessary and for those who don’t no proof is enough. Looking at the movie with today’s context though makes many more things pop. The portrayal of women, the mistrust of husbands, the classic Cinderella story, these things and more got me thinking as I watched. Maybe a more detailed post is need soon. 🙂

Nightcrawler

An serious and thought provoking movie, Nightcrawler is about a guy who roams the streets at night stealing just about anything he can. He stumbles on to an accident one night and sees a cameraman in action.

This sets him off on a mission to improve his prospects. He buys a video camera, a scanner to monitor police frequencies, gets himself an assistant and starts out.

Initially it’s as simple as listening to the radio, rushing off to the accident spot to grab a video before anyone else and then selling it to the news channels. But as he gets into the game he finds that is much more to it.

A snarky take on the corporate world about the games played, the sweet sounding insults, the stellar sales pitches and the politics, Nightcrawler is a fun movie to watch.

Dawn Of The Planet of The Apes

I’m not a great fan of this series but I have watched all the previous movies and this one completed the set. The movie is about how the Planets of Apes came about.

It all starts out with the accidental outbreak of simian flu and the escape of the apes that were being experimented on with the virus.

Over a few years the flu ravages entire counties and leave only a very small number of people surviving who are immune to the virus. One particular group of survivors sends out a search party with the objective of finding and restarting an old dam as they are running out of fuel. The group stumble upon the the ape society and there conflict begins.

If you are a Planet of The Apes fan you’ll enjoy this movie. The costumes and graphics are well done and the storyline is quite believable too.

April was a month of movies. I watched quite a few and am hopefully on target for my 100 movies this year challenge. I also managed to watch a fair number of old hindi movies.

Actually 9 out of 10 movies I watched were Hindi and 2 were really old. The other stand-out thing was YouTube Movies. Except for Lucy, I watched all the other movies on YouTube and for free!

A cast of comedians like Utpal Dutt, Saeed Jaffrey, Farooq Shaikh, and Deven Verma you can’t go to wrong in the laughter department. This is a movie about one lie and then the many lies told to cover the first lie.
Nothing spectacular and in today’s time it may seem a little slow both in story and humour. But back in those time this would have been a fun movie.

Nauker

A story about disguises and deception. Amar a widower switches roles with his ManFriday and goes to find a mother for his child. The family he is staying with has a maid, Geeta. Amar finds himself being drawn to Geeta.
Geeta reminded me of Cinderella, the sister who is treated as a pariah but is the most good-natured and beautiful of the sisters.
Of all the songs my favourite was the lullaby – Chandni Re Jhoom.
This movie is a simple entertainer.

Tuesdays are about movies but this week we didn’t watch movies, instead we finished watching the last season of The Newsroom. So that’s what this post is about. 😀

We started out with this series over a year ago. I remember enjoying it but I seem to have forgotten most of the storyline. I needed some refreshing before I watched the last season. Here’s some stuff I knew and some that I found out…

The Newsroom is a TV series about the day to day running of a news network and the lives of the people who work in it. The episodes revolve around recent real events and a news staff that is trying to report the news both ethically and responsibly.

Starting out in June 2012, the series completed in December 2014 with 25 episodes over three seasons. The series has a fairly large cast with the key roles being played by Jeff Daniels, Olivia Munn, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, John Gallagher, Jr., Sam Waterston, Thomas Sadoski, Dev Patel.

The series was created and mostly written by Aaron Sorkin and premiered on HBO. The series and its cast have been nominated many times but have won twice – the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Most Exciting New Series in 2012 and Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series – Jeff Daniels in 2013.

Some trivia –

The character of Sloan Sabbith is supposed to be fluent in Japanese and Olivia Munn who plays the role is actually fluent in Japanese, as she spent her childhood living in Japan and graduated with a minor in Japanese.

Aaron Sorkin has a favourite episode title – “What Kind of Day Has It Been?”. He has used this title for the last episode of all his TV shows – The West Wing, Sports Night, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. This is also the title of the series finale episode of The Newsroom.

Jane Fonda’s character Leona Lansing is quite like a female-version of her third husband, Ted Turner. The name “Leona Lansing” comes from two highly successful businesswomen, Leona Helmsley a real estate developer and Sherry Lansing the former Paramount Pictures CEO.

In the last episode of the series the guitar played by Jeff Daniels is actually an OM Jeff Daniels signature model created by Martin a few years ago.

And lastly The Newsroom is the first Aaron Sorkin show whose pilot episode wasn’t nominated for any Emmys.

The Newsroom was an interesting TV series with an insight into what happens behind the scenes of the news channels we watch. It’s a series I enjoyed and one I would recommend you watch.

After the lull of two weeks I’m back to watching movies and trying to catch up with that 100 number. There’s all the various miscellaneous movies I have on my list to get done, some of which I listed out last week – 12 Old Hindi Movies I Must Watch This Year.

I’ve been trying to add all these movies to some kind of to-watch list to make it easy and more organised to meet my years movie targets. And with this in mind have been exploring Youtube and it’s various functionalities apart from rendering videos.

Youtube seems to have quite an impressive collection in their movies section. Not all are free but the pricing doesn’t seem too bad either. I wouldn’t mind spending Rs.100 for a movie on demand if it means less sourcing, finding, downloading et. all. And most of the old classics are free, so it’s a yippee here. 😀

I’m going to be digging into Youtube more to figure out the various way  I can use it beyond just watching videos.

Turning Thirty

I came across this movie while trolling through Youtube and decided to watch it on a whim. A story about three friends but entered around one played by Gul Panag this is a story about the dramas in the life of a woman as she approaches the 30 barrier. The premise of the movie has promise but the delivery is lacking. The movie seemed too much a rip-off of Sex and the City missing the fourth GF. It could have been more real, not in story, that’s quite the stark truth but in acting.

Mockingjay Part 1

Based on the Hunger Games series this is the first part of the last book. One more movie to go to complete the series. Hunger Games is a series I have enjoyed and I must say I have enjoyed the movies too. Like the Harry Potter movies , the Hunger games movies also do justice to the books. If you are someone who doesn’t have the patience for three books, watch the movies, it’s not too bad a compromise. Can’t wait for the last movie.

Badlapur

This is the story of a guy in Pune who’s wife and child get killed in a robbery chase. The robber goes to jail keeping mum about his accomplice while the man is out on a mission to take revenge. Directed by Sriram Raghavan who’s previous EkHasina Thi I had absolutely enjoyed, this one also comes close as he explores human emotions and situations. The story comes full circle at the end leaving behind questions to mull on. Nawazuddin Siddiqui as always delivers, this man is some actor!

What movies would you recommend this week for me?

In the last two weeks I haven’t been able to watch any movies, so this morning as I walked the dogs I scratched my head and stared into the sunrise trying to figure out what I would write in today’s #TATM.

All that staring made my eyes hurt but a ray of light appeared. [corny no? 😀 ] I remembered that I was supposed to make a post with a list of old Hindi movies I want to watch this year. And that solved the dilemma.

I got thinking about some old movies I’ve watched over time and would like to watch again and 10 jumped out at me with ease. There are some movies that made a mark and some I could watch again and again and never be bored.

Some of these are on Top 10 lists, 100 Must Watch lists and such but some aren’t that famous or popular. Well, these are my favourite movies that I’d like to rewatch this year, at least once. 😀

1. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron – 1983

Director: Kundan Shah
Actors: Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Bhakti Barve, Satish Shah, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, …

This movie was a milestone in India Cinema. A simple yet powerful story with so many hilarious twists and turns that even a non-Hindi speaking person would roll about in laughter. Two photographers stumble upon a murder and embark on a journey of finding justice, but what they find is rampant corruption at every level and no justice to be found anywhere.

2. Chhoti si baat – 1975

Director: Basu Chatterjee
Actors: Ashok Kumar, Vidya Sinha, Amol Palekar, Asrani

Another comedy with some hard hitting truth, this is the story of a simple boy who wants to woo a girl but does know how to. Each time he tries the suave romancer steals the show and the girl from him. Will he get street-smart and learn the ways of wooing? That’s the story.

3. Angoor – 1982

Director: Gulzar
Actors: Sanjeev Kumar, Moushumi Chatterjee, Deven Verma, Aruna Irani

Based on Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors, this is the story of two identical brothers and their man Fridays who are also identical. What follows is a complete mix up and confusion when they get switched.

4. Chupke Chupke – 1975

Director: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Actors: Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri

A newly wedded husband takes up a challenge from his wife to test out her Uncle who is an astute judge of people. With a little help from friends and support from his wife he goes on to baffle the Uncle and create hilarious situations as he plays the role of a driver in the Uncle’s house.

5. Gol Maal – 1979

Director: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Actors: Amol Palekar, Bindiya Goswami, Deven Verma, Shubha Khote

Amol Palekar plays the role of Ramprasad and invents his twin Laxman Prasad when his finicky boss catches him at a football match. The boss Bhavani Shankar played by Utpal Dutt has very strict rules and believes an man without a moustache is a man without character. The maintaining of a fake twin brother leads Ramprasad into a series of wacky situations.

6. Saudagar – 1973

Director: Sudhendu Roy
Actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Nutan, Trilok Kapoor, Padma Khanna

This a movie with a lot of depth, that it also has awesome music is a bonus. I watched this movie first as a child and have enjoyed it since then. Each rewatch bringing more detail to the forefront. The story is about Moti who collects and sells gurd. He is in love with a PYT but cannot afford to marry her. So, he actions a plan of marrying the woman who makes his gurd to save more money and divorcing her to marry his PYT when he has enough saved. How it all works out is the story.

7. Khatta Meetha – 1981

Director: Basu Chatterjee
Actors: Ashok Kumar, Rakesh Roshan, Bindiya Goswami, Raju Shrestha

A feel good movie that makes me smile. Lots of moments in this movie that I love. Centred around two Parsi families that become one, this is a story of coming together, learning to love, adjusting, sticking it out and standing up for each other.

8. Anand – 1971

Director: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Actors: Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Sumita Sanyal, Ramesh Deo

A complete tear-jerker this is the story of Anand who is suffering from lymphasarcoma of the intestine and is destined to die in a few months. His impending doom though does not stop him from bringing a smile to many a face.

9. Masoom – 1983

Director: Shekhar Kapur
Actors: Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Tanuja, Jugal Hansraj

The illegitimate child of a man turns up one day at his doorstep with a letter saying his mother is dead. What is the impact of his arrival on the unsuspecting wife, his legitimate children and the man himself? Most important what happens to the child who is innocent of all indiscretions of the adults?

10. Khubsoorat – 1980

Director: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Actors: Ashok Kumar, Rekha, Rakesh Roshan, Shashikala

Manju’s sister Anju marries into a very strict matriarchal family. The family don’t like the rulings of their mother but go along to keep her happy and keep the peace. That is until Manju turns up to visit and then turns their world upside down.

11. Bawarchi – 1972

Director: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Actors: Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bhaduri, Usha Kiran, Harindranath Chattopadhyay

This is a hilarious movie about the Sharma family of Shanti Nivas who have been unable to hold on to any cook beyond a few months. Their squabbles and arguments drive every cook away until a young man named Raghu turns up. Raghu gets a grip of the kitchen and the family pretty quickly and soon they cannot do without him.

12. Pestonjee – 1988

Director: Vijaya Mehta
Actors: Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher, Kiron Kher

I have seen this movie just once and be warned this one is serious and has depth. I’d like to watch it again and understand it better. The story is about two friends who fall in love with the same girl. One is a serious man and the other happy go lucky. And then the story rolls as the years go by.

I may have made mistakes with the stories and such for all of this is from memory or how I remember the movie. That said these are still 12 movies that have made a mark and deep enough that I remember them even after years.

I used to watch and rewatch some like Chupke Chupke, Khatta Meetha, and Chhoti so Baat repeatedly but even that has slipped by in the last 7 years. I’m looking forward to catching up with these movies through this year.

Each one of them will bring along 3 hours of smiles and nostalgia. 🙂

This week we impulsively decided to do a movie marathon. We haven’t done that in a while but a friends staying over seemed like the perfect excuse to go back in time. Only we had forgotten the years that have gone by and the age that has creeped in.

We used to do all-nighters at one point in time, movies ran back to back through the day and night and the marathon ran for 3 days. This time we only managed 3 movies. 😛

The lyrics at the start are of Red River Valley, a cowboy folk song that is know by many names. I remember it though from school when it was sung in memoriam of one of our teachers.

The song is short but it has stayed in my head for years and it came pouring back when I heard it again in ‘Wild’. What can I say, it’s a haunting song. Give it a listen…

Wild

A coming of age movie. The true story of a woman who took up a 1000 km hike across the Pacific Crest Trail to find herself. Reese Witherspoon plays Cheryl Strayed, watching the movie I couldn’t help but think that The Legally Blonde gal has come a long way… This is a movie to watch.

Birdman

This movie I think is about an actor struggling with his past and trying to reinvent himself. But I say ‘think’ because I’m not sure. I didn’t really get the movie and if I can manage it, maybe I’ll watch it again. Good movie, but deep (I think). Some may like it.

American Sniper

Based on the biography of Chris Kyle, who is considered the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history, with 255 kills, out of which 160 are officially confirmed. This movie gives a glimpse into the head of a man who is a mass murderer if you want to see it that way. A propaganda movie but, it is good entertainment and you’ll not see the end coming.

I’ve made progress on the movie list. Not by leaps and bounds but like the cliche says, every step counts. 😀

Last week I watched 3 movies with Che , out of which one was in an old school theatre. It was such fun to buy a balcony ticket after ages and sit in a non-A/C theatre in slightly uncomfortable seats. And the snacks, they were simple and affordable compared to the 100’s we spent at the multiplex.

I looking forward to more movies in theatres, before they disappear and we are left with only the multi-screen monsters. The non-fancyness of the theatre didn’t take away anything from the movie experience, I think it only added to it.

Into The Woods

What happens when you take Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Jack and the Beanstalk, put them together and give it a modern twist? You get a kick ass fairy tale movie from Disney! 😉 A must watch…
My favourite scene was when Johnny Depp howls at the moon in a way that only he can make sexy. 😎

Baby

Don’t go by the name, this has nothing to do with those little wailing, pooping bundles. This one is an all out masala action thriller. Not the perfect tight storyline but it still did have me sitting at the edge of my seat most of the time. It also does have some mushy gooey dialogues that had me falling off my chair in laughter!
My favourite scene was when Akshay Kumar charges into a room to save the damsel only to find the damsel has saved herself! Full to full woman power! 😀

Gone Girl

I’d been meaning to read the book before the movie but I finally gave up. The movie is neat, the story is awesome and I definitely need to read the book sometime (especially since Che says a lot of stuff was missing). I never did see what was coming as the story unfolded. Don’t miss this one…

So that’s it for this week. I’m hoping in the coming week to watch some movies on my choice and by myself for a change. 😀
